Deerhound Club Breed Show (Sunday) 2021 Critique

Dear Deerhounders,
How lucky we were with the weather at our Breed Show!! It helped a lot to make it a very lovely and memorable weekend. I really enjoyed the judging of your lovely hounds, especially those who didn’t want to cooperate! Of course such hounds made it very difficult for their owners and me to judge them but I love to see how strong their characters can be. The young Ehlaradawn Campion was one of them but when he ran well, he showed a beautiful movement and his correct physique. And what a muscles does he have!!
I had some stunning young hounds in my hands and the old Aelfrida brought tears in my eyes. I was happy to see no high carried- or ring tails. Nearly all hounds had good proportions, good bone and feet, only a few were a little bit too steep in upper arm and hind angulation, just a few light eyes, most hounds had a good coat and a lovely long tail. And very important; lovely characters!
But … I am afraid we are losing the high carried, well folded, small ears and the so important, breed specific topline. I see the same on the continent. I really think that will be a pity and it will be impossible to get it back. I think those things are very important for the characteristic Deerhound. Please let us try to keep those points.
Hope to see you all next year at the Breed Show again!
Best regards,
Caroline Y. van Zanten-Boomgaard

Class: 19 – Maiden Dog of Bitch

1st Nr. 37, Mrs. C.J. Havercroft’s Kilbourne Lyrae at Dragonsisle – Nearly 15 months very nice young bitch with a lovely head. A little bit big ear, correct expression and a correct bite. Strong neck and correct angulations both ends. Enough forechest, good spring of rib but could do with a little more arch over the loin. Very nice underline. Beautiful coat. Lovely strong feet and she stands very correct on her wrists. Lovely long tail and best mover from this class.
2nd Nr. 7 – Mrs. H. & Miss J. Bruton & Dove’s Kilbourne Queen Mary at Mirzabad - Just 2 years old, strong bitch. Good head with correct aquiline nose, eye and bite but her ear is little bit big. Strong neck, enough forechest and good angulations both ends. Sufficient spring of rib but could do with a little more arch over the loin. Lovely depth of chest. Good feet but turning out a little bit. Standing correct on her wrists. Nice long tail.

Class: 20 – Special Coursing/Lure Chasing Dog or Bitch

1st Nr. 45 – Dr. S.A.F. Helps’ Beardswood Ulyssa;  Excellent, strong and big bitch with the requested,  lovely flowing lines which she kept on her excellent movement. I prefer a little more parallel headlines and a better carried ear but she has a lovely expression, nice aquiline nose and a correct bite. Excellent angulations, good strong bone and correct feet but standing a bit straight on her wrists. Excellent spring of rib - top- and underline. Nice low hocks, a correct coat and long tail.
2nd Nr. 46 - Dr. S.A.F. Helps’ Beardswood Unique Gem; Exactly the same lovely type as her sister Ulyssa but I preferred the movement of Ulyssa.

Class: 21 – Brace

1st I – Mrs. J. Wilce Quinton & Mr. R.J. Quinton; Excellent brace of brother and sister of the same type. Lovely dark eyes and small ears. Dark, harsh coats and good movements.
2nd D – Mrs. C.J. Havercroft; Very nice brace of the same type. A tad different in colour but with the same coat structure. Lovely heads and expressions. Good movements.

Class: 22 – Team  absent

Class: 23 – Special Breeders Group

1st A – Dr. S.A.F. Helps; A lovely team of excellent Deerhounds. The same type, same colour, same strong bone and same movement.

Class: 24 – Special not bred by exhibitor

1st Nr. 12 – S. & M. Clement’s Ehlaradawn Campion; This young hound made it very difficult for his owner and my by preferring to pace rather than show correct movement. But … when he trotted around the ring … he showed the most perfect, ground-covering, easy, active and true movement!! He then really danced around the ring! He also had a lovely masculine head, dark eyes with the correct expression, aquiline nose and a good bite. His ears could be a bit smaller and better carried. He has excellent angulations in front and behind, strong bone and good feet. Very good forechest and excellent spring of rib. Sufficient arch over the loin and good depth of chest. He is very well muscled and  ‘fit for function’!
2nd Nr. 92 - Mrs. J. Wilce Quinton & Mr. R.J. Quinton’s Kilbourne Louisa Chick to Kirjojax; Very nice, strong bitch who could have a little more body length. Good head with well carried ears, a dark eye and correct aquiline nose and bite. Very strong neck. Correct angulations both ends. Strong bone and good feet. Good spring of rib, depth of chest and sufficient arch over the loin. Good width of first and second thigh and lovely low hocks. Beautiful coat.

Class: 25 – Special bred by exhibitor

1st Nr. 90 - Mrs. J. Wilce Quinton & Mr. R.J. Quinton’s Kirjojax Pancho; 20 months young attractive bitch. Lovely head with parallel lines, beautiful small ears and super dark eyes. Correct aquiline nose. Strong nape. Correct angulations for age and good forechest. Correct spring of rib and depth of chest but hopefully will get a little more length in body when maturing. Very strong bone and lovely feet. Good width of first and second thigh and low hocks. Very nice, dark coat of good structure and a long tail. Good movement.
2nd Nr. 89 - Mrs. J. Wilce Quinton & Mr. R.J. Quinton’s Kirjojax Harris; He is nearly exactly the same as his sister Pancho but with a masculine head and a really very strong nape! He only needs more time to fasten his movement.

Class: 26 – Special Rotherwood stakes dog or bitch

1st Nr.45 - Dr. Excellent angulations, good strong bone and correct feet. Excellent spring of rib - top- and underline. Nice low hocks, a correct coat and long tail.
2nd Nr. 29 – Miss S.L. & Mr. H. Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Endlessflight; Strong, masculine hound. Good head on a strong neck. Correct ear, eye and bite. Correct angulation in front but could do with a little more length in his first thigh. Good forechest, depth of chest and spring of rib. Very strong bone and good feet but standing a little straight on his wrists. His movement is not as flowing as nr. 1, he is padding a little bit in front and moves a little bit wide behind.
